When you put your faith in Christ, God commissions himself to protect, provide, and care for you (Philippians 4:19). God always provides for his children, though often it is not in the way we expect or hope. God's provision is the idea that God will provide for people's needs in a way that is best for them and for God's glory. The Bible contains many examples of God's provision, including: Protection: God protects and shelters people, such as in the wilderness Victory: God makes it possible for people to win over their enemies Food: God provides food for all living things Forgiveness: God forgives and restores people to fellowship Turning water into wine: Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine Another example, in the Feeding the Five Thousand (Luke 9:10-17), Jesus takes responsibility for meeting the crowd’s need for food, simply because they are hungry. He uses five loaves of bread and two fish and with God's power, a small amount becomes enough to feed a vast crowd. Rather than replacing ordinary human means of providing for others, Jesus enhances them, resulting in a miraculous outcome. He explains further to his disiples in Luke 12:22-31, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?" The challenge is for us to see his provision and care, even when it is different than we expect. Because God is God, his ways are higher than our ways. His provision encompasses His ongoing relationship with all of creation, which is deeply dependent on Him (Psalm 104:21). We often take for granted the rain that falls, the sun that rises each day, the refreshing winds that blow, and the tides that cleanse our shores, and renew the life in our oceans. Yet, all of these are carefully watched over by our loving God as part of His provision for us. His provision is just further proof of His faithfulness and grace.
